Hilmar Örn Agnarsson (IS)

Hilmar Örn AgnarssonHilmar Örn Agnarsson (b. 1960) began his musical education in the Icelandic National School of Church Music and completed his music teacher´s examination in 1983 at the Reykjavik School of Music. In Germany he continued his education at the Hochschule für Musik und darstellende Kunst in Hamburg, where his main teachers were Gerhard Dickel and Rose Kirrn. After graduating as Cantor after seven years of study, he was appointed Cantor at Skalholt Cathedral in South Iceland in 1991, where he conducted an active and vigorous musical life. From 2009 - 2012 he was the Cantor of the Catholic Church in Reykjavik and is now an organist at the Lutheran Church, Grafarvogskirkja in Reykjavík.

He is the conductor of The South Iceland Chamber Choir, adult choir Songfjelagid and youth choir Vox Populi. Hilmar Örn has performed all over the world with his choirs and in 2005 he represented Iceland with his choir, The Chamber Choir of Biskupstungur, at Expo in Japan. Hilmar has worked with various music groups in the southern part of Iceland, both instrumental groups and various choirs. Through these musical groups he has worked with many of Iceland‘s most prominent musicians and composers, as well as international musicians, like the Japanese percussionist Stomo Yamash‘ta, Björk, Sir John Tavener and Kjartan Sveinsson of the band ´Sigur Ros´.

He has released numerous records with his choirs, most recently the acclaimed CD ´Iepo Onipo´ (´Sacred Dream´) with The South Iceland Chamber Choir with music by Sir John Tavener. This disk was awarded ´CD of the month´ by the prestigious Gramophone Magazine and received a nomination for best album at the 2011 Icelandic Music Awards. Hilmar Örn was the bass player and a composer in the renowned Icelandic New Wave band, ´Theyr ´ (´Þeyr´), from the early 1980s. Their existence was characterized by a deep interest in ancient wisdom. ´Þeyr´ helped bring about the ´New Wave´ movement in Iceland, releasing numerous records and becoming one of the first Icelandic bands to be known abroad. Hilmar Örn is also a composer, and penned the film music for ´Eldsmiðurinn´, (´The Fire Builder´) and ´Brennunjálssaga´, (´The story of Burnt Njal´) directed by Friðrik Þór. Hilmar Örn was honored to receive the government grant for exceptional artists for the years 2012 and 2014.
